Virtual reality can provide a dynamic and unique understanding of our memory performance as well as a potentially more valid assessment. Though the use of virtual reality in screening for memory ability in older persons is promising, evidence for its use remains sparse. In collaboration with the Department of Computing, Macquarie University, our team developed a game module to detect how well one can remember and recall items.
This project evaluated the use of our virtual reality online game Leaf Café with seniors and healthcare professionals.
Leaf Café is an online accessible screening tool which takes the participant through a simulated scenario in which they take the role of a wait staff member in a café.
The participant’s memory is assessed and they are asked to take part in a quick telephone cognitive assessment. Participants can also reach out to us to provide feedback of their experience.
Older adults can receive an engaging means for measuring memory in an environment that simulates a more realistic scenario compared to standardised pen-and-paper assessments.
You are eligible to use the Leaf Café tool if you are either:
Over the age of 18 years old
A health practitioner
Seeking to use an alternative screening tool that measures memory in a holistic and ecologically valid way while also allowing for remote delivery.

Your patient participates in the virtual reality café simulation.
Once the patient has completed the simulation, they are asked to take part in a quick telephone cognitive assessment.
