Formerly the Sustainable Health Initiatives for Arabic (SHIFA) reablement care project, this research project involves interviewing English-speaking and culturally diverse clients and service providers on their thoughts about existing and future wellness and reablement program.

Our goal?

To create a culturally-informed framework that can be used for these services.

Our  findings of this research will inform future methods to better support independent living and community engagement of Arabic, Chinese, Indian and Vietnamese seniors.

What this project involves

Interviews of up to 60-minutes will be conducted in-person or via Zoom with:

  • Older adults who have received the wellness and reablement program
  • Older adults who have not received any wellness or reablement program
  • Wellness and reablement service providers
  • People who support seniors
  • $30 reimbursement to interviewees for their time
  • You must be able to speak English, Arabic, Chinese, Indian or Vietnamese

The goal of the interviews is to gather insights from clients and service providers on their wellness and reablement experiences and culturally responsive programs for  seniors provided by members of their community.

Study 1 – Interviews with seniors

For these interviews, we’re going to be asking adults aged over 65 years about their experiences with the wellness and reablement program focusing on assessments, goal setting, services and effects.

Study 2 – Interviews with service providers

These interviews will explore how the Principles in the Aged Care Diversity Framework are applied in the wellness and reablement programs for English-speaking and culturally-diverse individuals. We’re looking to speak to service providers who have been, or are currently involved in providing reablement care.

Study 3 – Interviews with key informants

We want to understand how to build culturally responsive support programs for seniors in culturally diverse communities. We are looking to speak to non-professionals or community members who have been involved in delivering or supporting wellness and reablement programs.

What is the targeted outcome?

The aim of this research is to improve the effectiveness of wellness and reablement programs for culturally diverse seniors while taking into consideration their experiences and culture.

Our goal is to create a wellness and reablement framework that is culturally sensitive to our communities Australia-wide. This framework will consist of:

  • A Life Curve that is tailored to each of the cultural communities (Arabic, Chinese, Indian, Vietnamese).
  • A psychosocial frailty framework that can be adapted to the wellness and reablement program.
